The origin of the family is from Lich in Westphalen in
Germany.
They had and still have the name of Spahr (see review). As it all was
registered in the past in hand-writing it was also written in at time as Spaar.
Many of them were tanners form profession. A tanner
however did produce environmental problems due to the smell of the cowhide.
They were transformed into leather.
One of the sons of Johann Michael SPAHR, living
in Lich 1731 - 1803 and his wife Anna (Maria) Catharina VOGT (Anna Catharina
Horst en Johanna Catharina Horst) did emigrate to The Netherlands. Here this
son named Johann Jacob SPAHR (1767 - 1829) lived in the city of Drachten in the province
of Friesland in the north
of hte country. There he was a tanner. His house was on the corner (hoek) of a
street and a canalsystem. He named himself Van der Hoek or Sparh van der Hoek. Due
to misunderstandings at the registration-offices in later generations some
children were named Van der Hoek only.
Our Johann Michael Spahr (van der Hoek) did become a
wealthy man. His descendents spread mainly in the provinces of Friesland and Groningen. There is
however a South African branch too. See review:
